Do shoegaze artists need publishing representation if most of their music is instrumental?

Yes. Instrumental music can still generate publishing royalties, and shoegaze artists should not assume that a lack of prominent vocals means there is nothing to represent on the publishing side.

Shoegaze often relies heavily on composition itself: guitar melodies, chord progressions, instrumental arrangements, layered textures, basslines, and other musical elements. When you write original compositions, those works can have publishing rights separate from the master recording.

For shoegaze artists releasing music independently or through labels, publishing representation can become especially important as the catalog grows. A musician may have dozens or hundreds of compositions released across albums, EPs, singles, collaborations, side projects, and instrumental releases. Keeping those works properly documented and represented across different royalty sources can become difficult to manage alone.

Elizabeth Music Group Publishing works with instrumental musicians and can represent qualifying catalogs globally. We help organize and register compositions, review catalog information and splits, identify potential gaps involving older releases, and collect eligible publishing royalties from pay sources around the world.

Publishing representation can also be valuable when instrumental music begins reaching listeners internationally or receiving opportunities outside traditional streaming. Shoegaze, ambient, post-rock, dream pop, and other atmospheric styles can be particularly suitable for film, television, advertising, games, and other forms of sync licensing. While no placement is guaranteed, having an organized publishing catalog can help make compositions easier to evaluate when opportunities arise.

Our publishing roster also receives access to our exclusive Discord community only available to Elizabeth Music Group Publishing clients, where we distribute sync briefs and other creative opportunities and give musicians a place to connect and collaborate.

If you are a shoegaze artist with a growing catalog of original music, even if most or all of it is instrumental, Elizabeth Music Group Publishing can review your catalog and determine whether we may be able to represent your publishing.
